A chief and his wife were expecting a baby. The chief made a vow that until a son was born to them, the girl babies would be put to death. The mother, asked her husband to catch her favorite fish when her time came to give birth. Malaekahana gave birth to twin girls, La‘ieikawai and La‘ieilohelohe. The girls were raised separately. La‘ieikawai was raised by her grandmother. Wherever she was, a rainbow could be seen. Grandmother wanted her to marry well and secluded her in a house made entirely of the yellow feathers of the Hawaii O‘o bird. Though many tried to win La‘ieikawai, she was unlucky in love. Grandmother planned for her to marry Aiwohikupua, chief of Kauai. The plan was thwarted.
